How can proxy exceptions improve Firefox browsing?

I only started using proxy exceptions after a local development page stopped loading properly through an external server. Until then, I had assumed everything should always go through the proxy once it was enabled. Excluding a few internal addresses fixed the issue immediately. What other situations are good candidates for bypass rules, and when can exceptions cause more confusion than they solve?

Exceptions are useful when some addresses genuinely should not use the proxy. Localhost, private network tools, and certain internal services are obvious examples. They can improve browsing by avoiding unnecessary routing and latency. The downside is that excluded sites no longer follow the same path as everything else, so I would keep the list documented and avoid adding entries unless there is a clear reason.

The biggest benefit for me was keeping local resources direct while normal web traffic continued through the proxy. I had one internal dashboard that only worked on my local network, so sending it through an external route made no sense. When I reviewed how exceptions fit into the broader firefox proxies setup, I added the internal host and localhost to the bypass list. After that, the browser handled both kinds of traffic without me switching settings manually. I like exceptions when they solve a clear routing problem, but I keep the list short. Anything on it bypasses the proxy completely, so adding domains casually can make tests inconsistent if you forget they are excluded.
